Gurushots Review

My free personal critique review and some tips on gurushots or gurushots.com for photographers playground around the world. Gurushots photographers playing field is not the only one both using PC or mobile apps service. My hubby introduced me to this site a year ago, I tried and tested it, but I did not see the point in it at that time especially if you enter your photos as a newbie. Of course, you need to register as a member to be able to join the fun, social and educational!

“Photography is a passion, game photography is boring unless it’s innovative with collaborated ideas from its users enthusiast. Believe in what you do, validation from other people is just an extra bonus not the ultimate tool to ignite your unique passion and perspective. Most times, the institution (any system) locked us inside the box and become the norm, instead of producing free range creativity!”

#quote mine

The name is Guru: I don’t know why they call it gurushots, it’s not my business πŸ™‚
BTW, “guru” in Philippines Tagalog spells slightly different “guro” but with the same meaning “teacher”. Most or some of us are aware online that “guru” originally from Indian cultural term meaning “teacher” related to Indian monks or monastery icons they respect. Then in the online marketing mantra adopted the terminology and applied to any similar field related to teaching category, I guess.

How to vote

You need to work out your precious time voting as much as you can. In return, the voters will vote you back. After becoming a newbie to the next level, you are encouraged to vote again or support the newbies as well. Otherwise, you can pay your time for autofill the votes in place of voting each of your entry competition.

“Auto fills” just newly introduced in May 2016: The advantage is saving time in voting everyone’s photos mainly if you have limited time. The algorithm disadvantage for this I noticed, is less voting on your pictures than when not introduced at all. Not sure how this will pan out if it is a good thing in this way.

2016-05-05_1846

Another New “Auto Fills” introduced in July 2016: Another autofills earned by sharing your affiliate link so here’s mine, go ahead and click my link so both of us can earn autofills πŸ™‚ … thank you very much if you did so! https://goo.gl/ksxnSw

Newbie Experience Tip: As I mentioned above, being a newbie may not be as exciting as it looks but since I joined a year ago, I am not sure what newbies algorithm works this time. After passing the newbie stage, all non-newbies are encouraged to vote for newbies’ photos as there is newbie entry challenge I can see weekly. I did try to vote for newbies πŸ™‚ There should be auto-fills for newbies’ photos as well.

Swaps or Swapping Photos Tip: This was a convenient feature when you needed it. You can either buy or use your free giveaway swap feature every time your each challenge has ended. I use swap if I wanted to change an uploaded photo and wanted to replace it with another picture or if it mistakenly uploaded too. I sometimes noticed, your free swap after one of your photo challenges ended will not be given to you may be due to the bug system at times. Also, if you are swapping photos in the process, sometimes it does not work, and you will lose your exchange point already without giving back to you.

Watch Weekly: Each week there is often a new open subject or theme run by different guru photographers. You can join or choose any subject of photos you have archived, or you may want to photo shoot to upload for the competition. You may opt for reminders send to your emails what is an upcoming topic.

Follow and Follow Back: As usual in the social media cyber world, you can follow as many as you like. You are also obliged to follow five fellow photographers when you are sharing each topic of photos entry you have joined in to gain 25 points. Check out your profile page and why not follow back those who would have followed you too.

Adult Content: Warning! Women are more willing to be exploited in nude photography on this service. For adult content, you can either tick this off if you do not want to vote this kind of stuff or if you have kids around you. If you see such underage exploitation, you can report button provided.

Sharing on Social Media: You can either share your new entry on your Twitter, Facebook. Each share gains 25 points.

Achieving Ranks as a Photographer: Do ranks necessary? I think not; it depends on the photographs taken by you as the photographer and personal perspective of others with your view can differ. If you check out the Guru’s Top Pick photos chosen from the millions of photos uploaded to the site, you could see the images selected got similar beautiful images with others not chosen. Therefore, these ranking achievements are a result of collective perspective globally and not personal favouritism πŸ™‚ from a corporate world’s view closest to the boss or what not. The screenshot shows the levels of achievement I was by the time I post this article. The more points of voting on your photographs show the level ranks achieving to become a Guru photographer. You can also unlock your each ranking level according to the game’s requirements and other elements.

Business Products Related to Photography: This is an excellent opportunity for businesses out there to sponsor any game challenges run by a Guru for the week. Maybe it may help the website become genuine for players and not “just sound too good to be true”.

Lastly, yes you can win money or gadgets from the gurushots.com sponsorships on each challenge of the week. Did anyone win one yet or just the guru themselves winning it?

So, enjoy the fun if you’re a member. If you happen to get bored or suggestions not taken on board, why not try other competition sites online, here are my lists https://jenniferramirezbaulch.com/top-6-lists-of-photo-competition-websites/

NEW GURURSHOTS UPDATES AFTER THIS ARTICLE POSTED:

*From late 2016, Gurushots added “Boost” feature to boost one photo of each entry of your choice from your challenge. I don’t know how long, but they will randomly give “free boost” if you do not miss it within 24 hours. Otherwise, you can buy.

*From the end of December 2016, some Guru shortened the “length days exposure” of a challenge from 28 days length into 18 days.

*What’s new in early 2017? They tweak a bit of the profile interface and part of the design site emphasising the level of achievements and voting power.

*Feel free to share your “comment while it’s still open” because I did love the game when “I was in it” as one of the first adopters and we do hope it becomes better.

I have been a Gurushots member about 3 weeks and have entered many challenges. My problem is that I can’t advance beyond Challenger because in almost all the challenges I collect too many votes and go past Premier and achieve either Elite or Allstar. So I’m stuck in Challenger because of too many votes. The rules are you must get a certain number of Premiers before you can advance to the next level. With too many votes on each challenge I cannot advance. The only way for me to advance is to delete some of my images (and votes) in order to stay in Premier and therefore advance to Advanced. I actually at this point qualify for Expert.

@BillEdwards Thank you for the thoughts of sharing your valuable experience. I totally empathised with you as I was disappointed and stuck before I give it another chance. Gurushots do have space to leave feedback but I am not sure how well their troubleshooting team can cope and assess individual concerns. I tried tweeting them few times for a minor issue but nobody seemed to tweet back. Glad, you’re able to pass the game trap, I guess at this point it is a game with tricks after all and not a serious business πŸ™‚ See you around and let’s keep racing at the field.

I am also playing Guru now for a year, is a Master and passed 160,000 points, 19 ALL STARS and 3 GURU PICKS, was very disapointed to read then you must have a Winning photo to become a GURU. There are so many members, and perhaps I achieved it when I am 80 years old. I am going now for 70. It is still a nice game to play although I am just a amateur and like to take photos in my retiring years. In the beginning of Guru I am sure it wasn’t so difficult to become a Guru. Thanks for all the information .

@AnnaUys, Thank you very much for your precious time sharing us your great experience. Congratulations on all your achievements! Wow, kudos to your passion, which makes you not retiring at all rather inspirational/blessing because you’re doing what you love to do. In my perspective, if the top Gurus picks one of our photos then that’s telling us something you’re a Guru yourself without completing all the Top Guru Picks requirement! If we are getting votes from our photos that simply means a lot we are inspiring fellow photographers (amateur or professionals). Thankfully, it is a game that makes it interesting and fun with a twist and turn. It’s just; there are obstacles to separate the norms from the individual unique within us through our photo-eye lenses. No matter what the top Gurus think about… you are indeed close to becoming one from what level of points, all stars and guru pick you have mentioned. For me, I’m still currently in between to unlock Masters and Guru at the same time.
According to Gurushot current requirements to become a Guru (hopefully, they will not change it again) –
      We need:
      150Kpoints
      30 All Star Photos
      1 Photo Winner Challenge
      5 Photos Guru’s Pick
It will be worth waiting for!
Please let us you know when you get there, and you’ll get a greeting card from me from Australia!

I have been playing Guru Shots for about a year and finally I am a veteran, ..i don’t agree with the game being Fraud…. its a “game” and that’s it. The game does create your photography skills, makes you more interested in learning more techniques, looking for that perfect picture. I am sure there are others out there, but Guru Shots is fun… so I will continue. Sorry to see such negativity posted, …. Fraud??? Its just a photography game.

G’day Susan! Thanks for asking. From what I’ve found this is what Gurushots FAQ Achievements Calculation:
“In every challenge, multiple members end up with the same amount of votes – either for ‘Top Photographer’ or ‘Top Photo’. The percent and position calculations are based on the number of votes and members at the end of the challenge. For Example:In a challenge, 100 people out of 1000 finished with 555 votes (in ‘Top Photographer’ or ‘Top Photo’ ranking). This means that the calculations for percent or position will be done based on 900 members. *In the case of ‘Top Photo’ calculation, it depends on the number of photos and their votes.”

    Hello Jenifer,
great articel about gurshots. I just started with gurushots and in the beginning I was confused about the “ranking” systhem. Your text helped me a lot.
I thing gurushots is a funny game. But what I donΒ΄t like are the “pay-to-win” aspects of the game. (autofill, Swap and now the new function “Boost”). When you take a deeper look how the archievments works, you will see that you need much more votes when you want to improve above “expert” Status.
The game gets harder. I think that people who are focused on their Level have to use the “pay-to-win” aspects of the even if they have good photos.
I like the idear of GuruShots but I prefer to focus on my photowork and donΒ΄t spend much thoughts about the gurushot rank.

Great to hear from you, @Stephan! Yes, you’re right and getting to know our individual style without validation (ranking system) does not mean our photo work is not a masterpiece as a unique individual perspective lens even from the same cameras. At this stage, Gurushot still the balanced playing field out there than the others. I guess, somehow they need to compensate the website πŸ™‚
Enjoy your photography journey! Thanks lot for your time.

Two times in a row that i’m in the top ten and in few days of the challenge ended someone reviewed one of my pics as similar but it really wasnt. I hate this site!!!! People are ready to take you down for winning.

@DominicRoy that’s not right, I can understand. Some people take advantage for the game sake only. Sometimes, our macro photos can be similar to others too or some eyes lack vision to judge. I know even if it’s a game but we’re investing our time and not only learning different subject weekly but also game players behaviour and diverse personalities.

Hi Dominic. I can relate to your experience with someone reporting my photo as similar image! I had a photo of a close up of statues and then a photo of a whole church (the status where there by way, way far away). In no way these 2 photos where similar! What was more disappointing the “similar” image was a swap so when I entered original photo with quite a few votes in them the count of the votes was not given back but reset to zero. It took awhile to get all the votes back again and then more.

Sigh, I’ve been on Gurushots for 6 months & I’m currently stuck at “Expert” level because of the stupid requirement for 1 Guru pick even though I’m consistently Allstar and in the top 100 or percentiles. Beware of the vengeful photographer as Dominic points out.I had a disagreement with a Guru shots photographer (who gets away with blatant cheating) & I had 4 disqualifications in 4 days for similar image when they weren’t. All of which were Macro & they view black card as same back & foreground! I’ve raised this with no results. Gurushots can cost a lot & there are most definitely different rules for different photographers! I want to know how to get a Guru vote because it seems to be a favour bestowed on only few (& sometimes for the same picture multiple times when it’s recycle to a number of challenges). I’m also getting bored with how easy it is to get to Allstar & in the top percentiles but not be rewarded for it.

@Hevs, that’s true, every time there’s a change of the features the algorithm likely to change too. I’m guessing when there’s modification the hope of waiting to expose our photos entry for voting and Guru’s top pick less likely noticeable. I wished we could read Guru’s Top Pick brain, if they randomly pick or how they scour thousands or millions of photos? I had only few Guru’s Top Pick from my All-Star Level, but I never expected at all. I truly don’t know how Gurus pick from bunches of photos voted. Since you had consistent All-Star, your photos should have been exposed for Guru’s Top Pick. Although it shouldn’t be based on a level if I’d would be the Guru to pick one. My entries don’t get more votes as they used to be. I just don’t know why either. Maybe like you said, there are those who don’t wanna vote for the certain photo. I noticed, some others do delete their photo entries after being voted and levelled up, and maybe that’s one of the strategies to keep our profile safe from cheaters if you notice something not right.

I have no idea, how other photographers try to cheat on photos when the voting suppose to be anonymous. Unless those cheaters come to your profile and study your photos, maybe? Thanks for sharing, let’s hope for the best.

Over all, I am quite enjoying ‘playing” on GuruShots…:-) I have heaps of fun and I love voting and liking the images! But I had some strange experiences as well. In one of my Challenges, after just 3-5 days, I noticed, when I voted I used to get just small set of photos to vote on and they were all very sub standard! And they were coming up over and over again. Same and same. Firstly, I just reported the most inappropriate once but nothing happened! I sent dozens of emails to see what is happening. My believe, to this day is, that there was a “glitch” of some sort and I was actually being directed to the set of photos already rejected/removed from the Challenge to vote on them! There were less then 50 photos in that set and they were the only once I was seeing for like 15 days while trying to vote in that Challenge. One of the admins suggested it maybe that I voted too much at the start of the Challenge, and I voted for all the photos in that Challenge, so I was left with unvoted once. It may be so. It looks like we can only cast ONE vote for each photo and ONCE only in the Challenge. However, it does not explain why my reporting some of the images over and over again (for at least 10 days of a Challenge) did not resulted in removing them off from their system.

@Nitka, yeah I enjoy the game too, but I’m starting not to enter much entry. I don’t care about the ranking at all myself to think it’s a game after all. That is a strange experience you get; I’d agree it could be a glitch as well. I think I did notice maybe a couple or more times; I gotta vote for the same photos over again. The voting photo entries I noticed is getting lesser votes than it was used to be in the recent months. Let’s keep suggesting what’s best for the community. One day, they’ll get through πŸ™‚

Well, it is strange, on one hand I was advised we can only cast a vote once for each photo in that particular Challenge but yes, there are photos which may appear to a member more then once for a vote…it was suggested lots of photos are very similar so it may only “appear” that we are voting more then once for a photo….but it is not true! I think I have a good eye and I can recognise some photos I already voted on…it still does not explain at all that bizarre experience I had with that limited set of photos which were just awful ….here is hoping it was just one “glitch”….I have problems reaching an All star level for my photos even though I do receive a “guru pick”…I noticed very often my voting for my favourite Challenge does not give me any votes for my photos in that Challenge but instead I get votes in another….said all that, I also do not enter too many Challenges now…am being selective and spent less time voting anyway…cheers!

Thank you for sharing your experience @Nitka, appreciate your time.
After you spoke, Gurushot just shorten the days of voting, this will make photos less exposure again and harder to get All Star level neither alone getting to Elite, I reckon.

Anyone noticed that you can get 3000 votes in a single afternoon/day combined in 3 challenges and one pic that clearly in 2 hours achieves 500 votes that the top photos took a week to achieve and clearly given the days left in the challenge will outstrip the lead image… then the next day nada..nix..nil..zero…views remain stagnant for an entire day…not a single look that captivated an audience the entire last day…I guess the alorithim limits exposure. The game is rigged. Very very clear…too many votes too fast is equivilant to a couple of days no exposure. I will add given that as a “guru” you get to host your own challenge….why is it that only 4 owner gurus host all challenges? Clearly very rigged…the only great thing i can say is that you the user has clearly shown that i have some pinch of salt worth because you clicked my image as i did yours. Thank you and you have helped me to believe inhave potential…but not this site.
.believe in them and the algorithm that will do anything for you and be considered peers to the fantastic 4 is very foolish..it’s a business like any other. Having said all that and aware what the site represents..love seeing everyones photos and its very nice to get users feeback ????

G’day @GaryMinderman yes I noticed the algorithm is weird like any other business “social media” sites out there. Someone has to make money more than anyone else πŸ™‚ All of the above you mention, I do agree. We do hope there is no technical anomaly going on, like what I mentioned other social media could influence their service by adding swoop numbers of fake viewers to your regular exposure (live-streaming or posting photos or videos). Honestly, I never even notice any of those winning photos whenever casting my votes since I joined the site.
Thanks and appreciate sharing your experience with us.

Same experience.1st pick takes off like a rocket .Thinking hey here i’m going to smash all. Lo & behold to find when I add more pics. i come to a grinding halt .with pics not getting votes for days .Even after topping up the “rev Counter”What I also noticed was when viewing the winning pics at end of the challenge I dont recall seeing them on the voting page.cause if they so good and believe they are I would have recalled voting for them. So i’m just wondering ? The other thing I noticed in the challenges if I look at the results and some of the pics that ended up better then mine then I’m dis appointed. I’m not saying i’m a better photographer as im not. I’m just a novice retiree who loves taking photos and mainly uses this site to see how the experts view my shots . But clearly if i look at some of the quality and compiling of some of the pics I wonder how do they get more votes than mine.

Hi guys..:-) me again….:-)…Glad I am not “seeing” or imagining” things…so true with getting heaps of votes one minute and then not a single vote whole day or longer for a single photo in that challenge…very frustrating that…I used boosts for my photos but I never ever as yet came across when they unlock “free boost”…and yes…I hardly get to Elite level now…do not see myself ever getting to All Star = boost, guru pick and all that combined..and that is sad..:-((…and yes once again, I asked Guru admin why I never come across at those masterpieces in top 100 photos when voting – and I do vote a lot as I like it (very seldom use autofills)…so who gets to vote for them?…?….still love browsing through all the marvelous photos when voting..:-) heaps of fun…

I came here on a search i gurushots was rigged. Why? I see the same fenomenon. Some days you get heap of votes and others days you get none whatsoever. No matter if you keep the potmeter on high buy voting yourself. Even more strange is that i get votes on a regular basis right till i reach the tresshold of a new level. in 2 days i went to premier nad abot 20 voes frome elite and then all the votes dried up for 5 days and it just stuck there till the end even with a boost. Ok can happen once but it happened 2-3 times already which made me suspisious. Also i thougght in the beginning i thought voting was kinda annimous. Beginning to doubt that since i see some very poor images getting lots of votes. what have all these images in common? Their users have a mega load of followers. So i guess all in all its not about the quality but quantiy all over again. Reconsidering if i stay or just go.

Hi, love the article and the comments. One problem from me is that having started a Challenge at the same time as a friend, after a week my set of 4 photos have averaged about 500 views in that time. The friend, is averaging about 2,400 views per photo. I vote often, seldom letting the Exposure Meter drop and keep a close eye on the votes:view ratio. Why would there be such a difference in the number of views?

I started Gurushots a week ago and also think the game is fixed…. and that you basically have to pay for boosts to increase votes. I got over 500 votes for a photo in one day then as other people have said next day no votes…also agree that when you are close to a high level with several days to go and then the votes stop. I did reach Allstar level a couple of times (not had worst than Premier yet) and then checked out people with same votes as me. Oh dear…the ones I looked at looked like they had been taken with their eyes shut. Bad composition…out of focus…etc and you wonder who voted for them. I also agree that I’ve never seen or voted for a winning photo until the result. Only positive is that I’ve got 50+ followers and some of them are superbly skilled and talented. So I take that as a bigger compliment than being frustrated with a rigged game.

    I see it this way:
    1 – It’s a photo repository as any other “on line photo contest”;
    2 – The amount of exposure of your photos dictates the number of votes one recieves, and the final result is biased by the number of boosting keys you use, voting refresh, and/or the time you spend voting on other participants’ photos (of course you can buy exposure boosting tools);
    3 – The final result is often disapointing since you see that a lot of photos and portfolios get better final results than much superior portfolios and photos;
4 – After I saw the weight of the amount of exposure networking tools in the final results I just stoped using it… I prefer that my photos are juged in a fair way, based on their quality, so I prefer entering them in real photo contests.

@Antonio, thanks a lot for sharing your peace. It’s sad really. Yes, I do agree real photo contests and even our local communities are better ones than gamification online. I find it extremely unfair on Gurushots, that some people are using other photographer’s images as their own! I am a newbie, so I am not sure how things go. I’ve tried to report them to GuruShots, but nothing seems to happen. Is the “report copyrights” button there for decoration only? I have also sent messages to GS with names and links to prove who are the real photographers, but no reply. GS’s rules about Copyright: …You must own all submitted images. If you submit images that don’t belong to you, your account will be permanently removed.” I’ve already reported at least 5 person but their accounts are still active. I know for sure they are using images from:
    Tom Miles http://www.tmphoto.co.uk
    Gene Schiavone http://www.geneschiavone.com

Yeah, it’s better rather to inform the owners of the photos than GS.

Hi Jennifer. Some concerns, firstly with the swapping…I don’t understand why we often lost around 10% of visits between the old and the new picture ??? Even with a far better rate points/visits it’s difficult to gain more than 50points ? Secondly I don’t understand the difference of number of visits between players in the same challenge, even it we vote ten time a day and use autofill …

Hi, Thierry, I often had the success when I used the swap button before without using the paid boost feature. I think this 10% loss will depend on the exposure that’s why they have that “boost” feature if you want to pay. Did you read this link and let Gurushots know if it helps you or not? http://support.gurushots.com/support/solutions/articles/5000662317-what-is-the-swap-photos-button-

I’m not quite sure of your second question which you are referring to the number of visits? If you meant, some visits of each photo entry could be higher than the votes?

Thanks for your answer. My second point is about the difference in term of number of visits between the players…you are competing with people who often have more visits on their photographies than yourself, it’s not really equitable …

You’re more than welcome Thierry, I guess the photo visitors’ comparison between our opponents (as a player) including votes for that matter will often rely on the exposure especially after that “boost feature you gotta pay” or (wait for the boost freebie) making all the difference for all of us in the game…
I wished Gurushots could be more generous with their game features’ bonuses to keep the game stimulating and lure you/us to stay longer…

It seems you are luckier than I am with boost but the free boosts are not specially at the most effective moment. A true challenge should be on the ratio points/visits but I understand that it’s only a game and a pleasant one but distorted by bonuses and strategy. Thanks for your answers and have a nice day.

Hi Jennifer, I have been playing GS for since January 2017. I am a Math Teacher and therefor like to “do the maths”. Since the beginning I decided to “follow” everyone with a higher voting power (rank) than me. I am currently at a voting power 6 (do not know the rank name, sorry), just waiting for that illusive 5%-er. I found an above average saturation on new people to follow. What I mean to say is that I feel that I am in a certain pool of voters. I think that only they see my photos.
This I “affirmed” by the photos in the end result. Most of the beautiful winning photos, I have never seen. It is an enormous number of photos per challenge (about 10 000 times 4 = 40 000). If there are groups, I just hope that I am in the “cool” group, because I like games. I Love GS, hope they keep me interested. BTW, your profile pic at the end of this page, needs work. Come let me help you, he he.

Let’s see how you last in the game :-), Please do enjoy while you can.

I entered my first challenge recently and 12 days into it, each of my 4 photos got 610 views give or take. I kept my exposure meter on high for the most part, I think. Photo currently in the lead has 3600+ views and some others are past 4000+ views. Beautiful captures, but the view count suggests pay-to-win ‘boost’ feature is an absolute necessity on gurushots.

Hi, the counters are cumulative and most of the best players (I didn’t say photographers) post the same winning pictures again and again that’s enough to explain the difference. Far more obscure is the link between followers and views. I don’t know how it is possible but when on the historic you find “Mr.X is following you ” and just after “Mr.X has just voted for your picture” there is somewhere a mystery…

Guru shots is a fraud – I’m sorry, but if anyones was thinking how guru shots is serios photo contest site, then he would be very naive.

I realized that for the first day, when I have seen “pay” buttons for boosting , but of course I give it a shot, why not.
At the end of the first challenge – I can recall – I was not seeing any of these “winning” photos anywhere, or vote for them,
so I can confirmed that experiance from others here…
My first thoughts about fraudulent – or at best – missleading site purpose ( which is clearly fair photo competition ) was obviously correct.

If no one here have not seen any of winning photos during challenges and voting – something very fraudulent is happening here…
Because – each of us was open every day, contest entries, and vote for them. There is no chance – to not see – some of the winners photos , at least one.
If everything is regular – which is clearly not.

SO – MY THOUGT AND ALSO A CONCLUSION HERE, IS : GURUSHOTS IS FRAUD

Gurushots makes no sense to me. It is geared in a way that voting for terrible photos would be the best strategy. I have also noticed that even with playing around the clock always voting and keeping the vote meter filled and even using a boost my photos only get like 50-100 views during the boosted period. During the same exact time period I see thr too photos gaining 500 or more views. I felt the too photo was actually pretty close to the same quality as mine. However, there is no way I could keep up when only getting 50 – 100 views at best. I got very very hooked and have only been playing for about a week now but I started to realize how silly it is. Any votes I cast is actually a vote against my photos. Why would I vote for the best ones if it is just pushung me farther back? This system makes it better to vote for lesser quality shots. Thr whole thing makes no sense and the views algorythm is broken.

      | Reply

I completely agree with you. In the beginning I was trying to vote for the most beautiful shots but then realized the same thing as you. I am definitely not playing as much anymore, just occasionally for fun without any expectations. My photos get at least 3 or 4 times less views than the top 10 players photos so I guess it is not all that fair πŸ˜‰

      • JG
        | Reply

Plus, if you do happen to get as many views they may not be views from the higher ranked people. Until I win a challenge I am not believing the system isn’t totally controlled. There is a huge factor of just figuring out the best time to post or vote to hopefully get seen by the gurus or masters.

GG, today I looked at hundreds of pictures that were ranked higher than my photos. And I observed that not one of the photos ranked above me did I recognized as having been seen when I voted. This doesn’t mean my photos were better than those ranked above me, it just means I never saw any of them when I voted and I didn’t vote for or see one of the thousands of photos above me. How strange that not a single photo looked familiar and not a single photo got a vote from me. The voting process isn’t transparent as no one can see who voted for any given photo except the person who posted the photo. This means there is no way to validate the voting process.

In the case I cited above my ranking was about 1500 ish from the top vote getter. There were about 12,000
ish submissions for this particular contest. That means I was in the top 12% and yet not one photo ahead of me had I ever seen or voted for. How can that be, as I voted two or three times a day for the entire 18 days of the contest? The lack of transparency in the voting statistics makes one wonder how legitimate the process is.

Another thing that concerns me is the only way one can get votes is if you use auto fill, boost or vote. If you don’t you get zero votes. Auto Fill and Boost cost you money to use and that seems very contrived. Also when you vote and fill up the vote meter it makes your photos capable of receiving a vote for very brief time after which you receive nearly zero votes…. This isn’t explained at all by Gurushots…. I think what’s going on is when you vote your pictures show up on the initial vote page and therefore are visible for anyone who starts voting but after a short time your photos show up on pages much farther down the pile of pages. I rarely vote on more than one or two pages of photos and I think other voters are like myself and therefore see but a small fraction of the photos posted. This makes it hard for me to believe that any photographer could receive thousands of votes as their photos can’t get thousands of views.

    • Richard
      | Reply

Hi. Late reply, but I think I can explain some of the mechanism. Say there are 1000 photos, and 100,000 votes cast. Gurushots states in many places that it doesn’t matter when you submit, your picture will get the same number of views. In my experience, watching not just mine but others pictures, this is true. So, maybe there are 300,000 views generating those votes. That means each photo should receive 300 views that can produce votes.

If you boost a picture, you gain 200 extra views. May be 250, around that.

So, at the beginning of a challenge, very few votes have been cast, so the average views per picture is low. Perhaps 10-20 views for the first hour…. Unless you boost your picture. Then it gains 200 views more, giving it 220 views in the first hour. So in that hour, the boosted pictures dominate all choices. This is when you will see those high vote pictures, and often not afterwards.

Once a picture reaches the overall average number of views, it won’t be voted on again. It’s had its day. Until the average number of votes gives it a few more views. It’s this average that drives the decline of the meter, not time. Watch it on a speed challenge. They often get silly numbers of votes, and the meter can start declining very soon after you voted it up. But if your picture has hit it’s average plateau, those extra votes you do don’t give you any more views. You’ve maxed out.

It also matters Who is voting, not just what on. If your picture gets 1 voter per 5 views and it is shown to 100 viewers, you will get 20 votes from Newbies, but 180 votes from 20 gurus. So you want to time it that your pictures are seen by the high voter power users. When is this? Often, either at the start of the challenge, or at the end. First and last golden (couple of ) hours. Speed challenges are pretty constant.

Gurushots is a game, and it has mechanics behind it. Once you work out how the game works, you can devise strategies – timing, when to submit, when to boost (if available), etc. – to improve your success in the game.

If you time it right, a non-boosted picture can outperform a badly timed boosted picture, even though it gets 200 less views.

I have been ‘playing’ GuruShots for a few weeks now and i am progressing nicely.
I enjoy the different challenges and themes. And get satisfaction from people voting for my entries.
    HOWEVER!
I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the flouting of rules! Surely someone should be policing the ‘report’ facility?
All too often, when looking at the high scoring photos in the ‘All Star’ and ‘Elite’ positions. ‘Most’ of the high scorers have submitted photos that are against the rules i.e Similar images. Background etc etc etc………….
Despite frequently reporting, the same images keep appearing.

Surely this is unacceptable, as if there are prizes, the winners have cheated!!

    Feeling rather disillusioned!!

Hi guys…:-) me again….I have been with GS for awhile now (still playing and having fun but not as much as I used to). Anyway here are my few thoughts.

I was also confused with a ratio of views of my photos and the actual votes for them in Challenges. I believe now that if you vote/autofill, your photo or photos may appear in the first lot voted in (say around 70 photos for each set?). If majority of voters just look at 10/20 or even less photos appearing on top of the set, they never get to SEE your photo which may be down below…BUT I strongly believe it is still counting as being “SEEN” as your photo was in that set. Therefore IF/WHEN I have time I actually try to look and vote for as many photos in each set as I can. I am still very selective with my votes AND likes but I believe I do contribute to the game.

Another matter which frustrates me to no end is the consistent drying out of votes. In the latest SINGLE OBJECT Challenge even my top photo did not receive a single vote for 3 days! I think someone in admin pushed the stop button as I was maybe progressing to quickly….next time it happens I will let them know what I think about it!

And lastly, there must have been some kind of change the way they run things as in the last month or so I am being asked if the photos fail to meet the Challenge criteria/rules. So, someone reports wrong/inappropriate photo in a Challenge and they ask for second and maybe even third confirmation/opinion. I do report photos which are in no way related to a Challenge (say People and Nature Challenge – beautiful butterflies or flowers but not a single person to be seen anywhere – not even a shadow!). I also get to compare if photos are similar. Not sure who reports those as I have no idea if we can see who submitted and what photos in a Challenge. But I have compared all 4 photos in couple of Challenges and gave my verdict…:-)

Therefore, there is a bit more fun and action happening on GS atm. But the way the photos are being exposed to the voters must improve and pronto as they will lose a lot of good photographers frustrated with that system.
ok. This is all. Any thoughts?

I’ve been on GS for awhile now, and currently at Veteran level. I have noticed, however, that most of the time, I’m not getting the views that other people are getting, despite the fact that my exposure meter is almost always on max. Perfect example: Recent challenge open for only as hour, top photos have over 300 votes. Yet my top photo only has 21 VIEWS. I deal with this with almost every challenge. Have only gotten 4 All-Star finishes. Close to getting my 5th one(and moving to Expert rank), but my votes tend to fade out just when I need them most.

I have been playing on Gurushots since July and I’m now on the Champion level. However, I noticed something truly suspicious. It’s my first time ranking first in a current challenge. All of a sudden, there’s this “guru” who all of a sudden was able to snatch the top spot. I decided to keep watching how he and I rank (you can actually see now how you and everyone ranks while you play). When this “guru” finally got enough votes to have a huge lead from the second ranking photographer, that same top ranking guru disappeared from the top spot all of a sudden. I looked for him in the ranking as I know he has had enough votes to remain in the Elite level if he has just swapped a picture. It didn’t take me that long to find him somewhere in the 50th rank. To my shock, however, I saw that his top ranking photo in his set of four photos was missing! He literally just had three photos all of a sudden when he had been playing with all four entries before! How was he able to hide that photo? I know that photo was hidden so he can simply put it back on in the last few hours or minutes before the challenge ends and instantly grab the top spot to win. The problem is that removing a photo from the competition is not a function available to everyone; we can only swap, not remove…so how was he able to remove/hide his top photo? I even took screen caps of his photos and ranking while he had the four photos and when it was reduced to three as evidence.

I now have reason to believe that this “game” is completely rigged so to keep people from advancing too fast or from winning challenges. I believe they do this with what I think are “pawn or fake gurus” who play the game but have special privileges to advance easily on the challenges. Just think about it…if they are already gurus, why would they even exert the effort and spend more money to win challenges when they already have achieved the highest status in the game? I don’t think it’s worth it to spend all those money for swaps, autofills, and boosts just to win a $100 gift card to some trashy kickstarter “photography” online shop.

I also noticed that there are very well established and well known photographers already who are currently playing the game. I don’t see the reason for them to even compete as I don’t think they even need the validation from winning challenges in Gurushots. I also noticed that there are some photographers who play the game whose photos seem pretty much the same (search Suzy Mead and Lisa Holloway on Gurushots to see what I mean). Both (if they are, in fact, two different people) have advanced very quickly in the game (winning so many challenges already and getting picked by the host guru all the time). Actually, Suzy Mead is already a Guru but she’s still competing with amateurs when she’s already a very well established photographer (same with Lisa Holloway, but she’s currently a Champion like me). I mean, I’m doing Gurushots as I hope to have some leverage or bragging rights to hopefully give my photography business its much needed boost/and or credibility. What puzzles me though is I don’t see the point for these already very well established photographers to need the validation from Gurushots as I’m pretty sure they’re busy enough with their very well established clientelle already to even waste time playing on Gurushots…unless, perhaps, they’re payed by Gurushots to play as “pawn players” to help rig the game?

I’m now very certain that Gurushots is rigged and I’m done being fooled by it. The challenge I’m competing in at the moment is definitely my last. I’m not wasting any more time and money on that rigged website.

Hi Jennifer. I have written before criticising Gurushots but have continued playing just because I love photography so much. I have reach All-star level 56 times and won Best photo for Colorful Animals recently. I’ve had 3 Guru picks and need 2 more (and a few more points) to become GURU! I only vote for the best photos in the spirit of the game… because it does annoy me when bad photographers reach high levels and I can only imagine they achieved high status because others vote for the worst photos. I have spent a considerable amount of money on swaps and think the prizes are quite poor.
I won Best photo out of 47, 000+ entries but the prize equated to about Β£60 worth of Swaps , Boosts and Autofils which go back into playing the game. I still have suspicions about the game and think there are inconsistencies that are hard to explain, but I will continue til I reach Guru level and hopefully host my own competition and find out how it all really works.

I’ve been tracking my views, and am still not getting many no matter what I do(swap, post early, post late….same results). Speed challenges? I got 700+ votes in the first 2 hours, then no views for the next 2 DAYS. Boosts? I boosted a photo that was actually doing well, and gained over 100 votes in the next hour….then no views at all! Boost is supposed to be for 24 hours, mine only lasted ONE. I’m no photo expert and I don’t expect to win any challenges, but I deserve a fighting chance just like everyone else.

I am extremeley upset about gurushots (playing for Β΄round 4 month now and reached Expert Level; close to champion). There was an issue lately with the voting process and i complaint to gurushots when my image (it was amont the top 50 images in the HDR challenge) was reset and had 30(!!) votes afterwards.
After that complaint i was refundet with swaps, boost and autofill and it climbed (like moved from a wizzards hand) up to rank 70 or so because people startet to vote for that one like crazy and after that it must have been labeld as “undetectable” or “unvotable” Β΄cause it hardly got any votes from there on (the other 3 get votes but less than before).
Now i finally made it to all star (23:31h remaining) and my image stands at 721 votes and rank 117 or so. At least a little satisfaction but on the other hand it gives me a bad taste because that shows to me that there is a lot of manipulation possible behind the scenes.
I want to support the posts from “Frejie Ferr October 13, 2017” and many others here who adress strange things happening. To me there are a lot of nasty things going on to prevent good photographers to reach the top ranks.

    Think i donΒ΄t wanna participate anymore …

        Thanks, dear Admin.
As a follow up – and to voice further anger- if i am allowed to – i have the impression that gurushots is going down the drain performance-wise since they introduced those terrible “speed-challenges” wich are (to me) just created to suck up autofills and swaps like a dry sponge (participated twice).
Besides that i have the impression that it does not make any difference how much you vote the time untill your (as i call it) “vote-meter” drops has shortend (means it drops much faster now). And … it does not make a difference whatsoever how much you vote in terms of visibility. I kept voting till my fingers bled so to speak and got almost no votes at all for the images i mentioned in my last post.
I canΒ΄t help it btw to think that gurushots has ties to 500px – do you think thatΒ΄s possible? I think so because when the side loads or waits for something blue lines circle round and that reminds me very much on 500px (Androidlogo for example). Either they have ties to or use same kind of software?

        My (sad) gurushots summary:
        – Intransparent
        – unfair
        – costly
        – dissapointing
        – time consuming

still sorry for my bad english but i refuse to use auto-translation – to my experience theyΒ΄re doing mostly even worse than me. :o)

Hello Mirkad – thanks for sharing – able to translate online πŸ™‚
      Translation:
The GUru Shots problem is that pictures are not displayed equally across the challenge. Only at the beginning, the photos receive a lot of points, but the longer the challenge lasts, the less often the photos are exposed and therefore it is difficult to achieve a higher position in the ranking. This is daunting, so it may be time to think about improving the voting method, so that the photos are exposed by the whole challenge and not only at the beginning, on the first day.

Gurushots is a site to make money not to promote art. Swaps are bought! I have the same experience. In the beginning I swept a lot and had very good results. As I begun to swap only the free ones, photos that received more than one thousand votes in a single challenge, got only 2 to 300!, no matter how full is your exposure gauge.
But gurushots has another secret that I didn’t discover yet. In the beginning of the contests there are a few photos that start with hundreds of votes in a few minutes. These photos receive especial treatment from the staff or gurus and it is scandalous to realize that photos of the same author (not mine) in the same challenge are quoted normally with a few tens of votes (as mine). If you don’t start in this position you never win a contest and this is unfair because it is a hidden rule that we can’t account for.

I’ve been suspicious but faithfully continued playing. I did take a break for about a month and I noticed when I came back, the voting on my pics was sky high. I don’t believe that the entries I submitted were any better than those submitted before my break. I believe it meant to entice me or suck me back in and it worked. I spent money and now….my votes seem to be slowing down again. Its rather frustrating. I’m stuck in “expert” mode and can’t seem to get get a “guru pick”. I’m about to take another extended break and we’ll see what happens when or IF I return.

My experience of the site in 2 months playing is that it is an entertaining game. I have years of old photos, even scans of old negatives I’ve submitted. (Oldest image I’ve submitted I shot 32 years ago.)

Number one thing I love about it? It has restored my passion to look through my old photos (probably getting on for 100,000 digital, and perhaps 50,000 slide/negs) and find gems I had forgotten about. I’m keen now to get out and take new photos, and remember the kinds of topics that might come up. Look for patterns, colours, textures, etc. It has inspired my creative juices.

In my first month, I won the Newbie competition. I submitted lots to it, and they all plateau’d at around 130-150 votes from mostly Newbies – 1 vote each. Then in the last 3 hours, I noticed masters, champions, even the odd guru voting on my new swap. It shot to 400 votes. So I swapped my other 3 pics out for ones doing well in other challenges. They all shot to 350-400 votes. Grand total 1600+ and a clear win. The pictures weren’t drastically better. But the people voting were worth more.

There are still some confusing frustrations… and I’m still trying to work out why. But overall I’m convinced the system is as fair as it can be, without just giving everyone votes for participating. It’s a combination of a good picture, and good timing to get the high voter power people voting on it.

Main thing. It’s a game, not a gallery for commercial photographers. It’s not there to promote your work, but to be an interactive (paying) social game. There is some stunning work from all around the world, and amateurs can play with the big boys. I was delighted to see my zoo animal photos do better than photos from a known expert who runs commercial wildlife photo safaris. Ego boost? Hell yeah. And why not? Level playing field, and people appreciated my work more.

The other thing to bear in mind are the sheer numbers involved. Take the Newbie competition. 200,000+ participants. Millions of votes cast. You are not going to see even 5% of those 600,000 or so images. And that is the unpopular Newbie one. Other challenges, I’ve seen 25 million votes cast.

I’m having a blast. It’s made me re-evaluate the photos I take and have taken, and see them as better than I thought they were. I’m heavily critical of my own work (some would say depressingly negative), and it has been nice to see people appreciate my photos more than I have done myself.

I’m sticking at it, but would love to know how guru picks work!

I’ve been playing for a few weeks and worked my way up to Advanced in pretty short order. I needed no effort at all and with pretty crap images from my Google photos cloud library, ie, stuff synched from my cell phone, out of focus, naff composition, over processed etc etc – I couldn’t lose; I was regularly hitting Elite! But now I struggle to make it out of Skilled into Premier …. I also notice the stagnation of votes – this game is very rigged!

Hi, a come back yesterday after months of silence crowned by a top photo award…and now my challenge resides in getting four more guru’s picks, something fully random to access to the master then to the guru ranks … so this time I will not waste my time playing in categories that are not mine only in the intention off getting free bonuses but take my time to get to this achievement…
A nice entertainment for ones who manage to detach themselves from the stake…

GuruShots is a joke. They don’t even verify photos. Take a look at the Cosplay contest going on currently. It’s full of stolen photos of cosplay “celebrities” from all over the world. People have been reporting them and commenting who the actual photographers are and are being ignored and comments deleted.

What a great joke…but a joke to make money, not to promote art.
As in any game there are hidden rules for the owner win… but broking the clear ones in own favour is not fair.
Why in the next few minutes some photos own hundreds of votes while other, sometimes better ones receive a few votes?
Ansewr: views. A photo seen ten times in five minutes can’t get 500 votes
Question: Why some photos in the begining of the challenge get hundreds of views and others a fews ones?… mistery!…
I think you are secretely ranked according to your expending in swaps and other stuff.
In the begining I bought some stuff got good results (I an now, according them, Master). As I was expeirencing the functioning of the game I stoped buying stuff, my results dropped out and photos that got more than a thousand votes in single challenger, got one to two hundred.
Yesterday I entered a Challemge. I post a photo and it got 32 votes and the first one got about 6000 in a few minutes, next I swaped it and received a notification that my swap was successful (more than 80 votes).
This morning my photo had 16 votes and next I received a notification that my swap was successful wining -(minus)10 votes (32->22), and later the same notification advised me that my swap was sucessful winning 30 votes (32->62).
      Is this fair?… honest work?…
      What do you think?

And it goes without talking about the quality of some winning photos.
Fortunatly… there are also very good ones!…

    Hi Jennifer!
I am now officially a GURU… at last!!
I gained my 5th Guru pick a few days ago which raised me to this elusive level!
As I stated in my last email I have contacted them regarding running my own competition as it’s states you can do…..but they said they didn’t think I could reach Guru level that fast (about 15 months) and that it’s not set up yet. This is a bit strange as there are quite a few Guru’s playing the game and I’m sure I’m not the first one to ask. It stated in the game you could do it 15 months ago!!
I have continued playing because of my love for photography. I have spent a considerable amount on swaps as I have an ever growing library of photos to choose from. I have sent this email to prove reaching top level is possible and for other people not to give up. There are still questions as others have stated why you can get lots of votes one day, then none for days and I am still really disappointed and curious why I’m not allowed to run a competition. But I still enjoy the challenge!

CONGRATS Guru Paul! At long last – a great outcome – thanks for sharing! Great to hear from you despite the predictable treatment you’re encountering. It’s predictable, otherwise, this page of my site would not be so popular with similar intuitions of the so-called gurushots game even though we all have hanged around to give them a second chance (whoever running the show).

I am currently at Expert and like Thabreez, stuck because I can’t seem to get a Guru Pick for the life of me. I have been playing since last summer and just feel like I am being kept out of the loop! Congrats again and thank you in advance of any information you can share.

        | Reply

        Hi Cherish
There is a bit of luck in getting Guru picks because we choose them like we do when we are voting to fill up our exposure … totally at random from what comes up.

I have had about 6 or 7 competitions of my own now and varied the picks l have made from start of the competition to near the end. I have now received 18 Guru picks myself from other judges and they were all given at different stages of the competition too. There are now more competitions than when l started playing, so it increases the odds of getting a pick.

It can be a frustrating game sometimes but l still enjoy playing even though I have now reached Guru level and l do believe lm a better photographer than when l started. I wish you luck and hope you get your Guru pick soon.

      Hi Thabreez
I have sympathy for you waiting for Guru picks.
I think that Guru’s choose photos like we do when we are voting. There is a lot of luck involved to which pics are being shown at the time they are voting. There are thousands of photos in each competition and there seems to have been a big increase in players.
Players who joined at the start of the game (they have Pioneer badge) have more Gurupicks and didn’t have to win a competition to get to Guru level. I have waited months and months for my last one. My best advice is to look at who the competition judge is because some do pick lots more than others. Good luck!

I’m almost in the same case but with only 7450 000 points but one guru pick I’m stuck at Champion level … I think that with a win, I’ve also got one, we must play a different strategy and rather than posting at the last moment for the public, we must post only pictures in phase with the judges tastes and that since the star of the game …it will be longer, but also more efficient and cheaper…

Thanks for your advice. I understood that the only solution is to post the photographs on the first day itself and wait for a Gurupic. But I know there are so many more deserving ppl to get a Guru pick then me, and they do not get it. I have no idea how it works – those guru picks. So I am Champion level now. I do not want to be a Guru. And I do not think I am good enough to be a Master. I am sort of happy where I am atm. That said I only got to Champion level because I got to ALL STAR level in couple of the speed challenges. Did not like them at first but then I got to All star so quick I could not believe it. I love travelling and taking photos so they are probably interesting from different places but they not masterpieces for sure!…I wish we had a site where the best man/woman won – fair and square…allas there is nothing on the web except Viewbug which I play but very rarely now……GL to all..:-)

@ThreeKings why would you use someone else property unless you have the rights to it? There are sites you can use or download photos for free both for personal and commercial use without written permission. There are sites where you can buy them and use it wherever you want it, but it depends to the competition site policy. Even so, I don’t think you can use them for competition sites – what if everybody can use those photos at the same time; then you lose the unique art to it?

I think guru shots is really interesting programatically. I am really interested in the maths in the back end as well as the speed of the secondary compression of the images. How the voting/exposure is calculated, how the ranking works under the hood and especially how it performs so well! The content distribution of all the images- if completely random- would mean that you would need so much space at the edge server for the CDN that it would be really really expensive to operate. I think there is something happening between the images you see and the ranking that you are in. Would like to know more about the inner workings.

Some photos are good but they end up with to many votes and they don’t offer the quality and sharpness how it’s possible?

Hi Victor, can you share these examples orstolen images? Gurushots takes copyrights very serously and are constantly removing accounts of players who brake the rules. There is actually an acitve Facebook group (run by players) that report these cases and share their results. You can check them out for yourself here https://www.facebook.com/The-GuruShots-Users-Union-268624500302195/

Lack of exif is not really proof of a stolen image. A simple ‘save for web’ in Photoshop will strip the exif data. Also finding a photo elsewhere on the internet, even on a stock website, isn’t really proof. As there are stock photographers who play Gurushots.

Anyway, best of luck in the challenges.

Hello, just wondering if this next incident on gurusots is possible or was it a glitch, a photo of mine had already boosted in a challenge and had stopped pulsing after the 24 hours had elapsed, a day or so later the boost box showed that it was unlocked and out of curiosity clicked it and surprise surprise it allowed me to boost another of my pictures in the same challenge, so is this normal or just a glitch?

I think that between unlimited swaps (some players swapping till they aren’t in the top ten) and the new rule about fills which pushes the players who want to avoid loosing their time or their money to blind voting, I’m afraid that this game is no longer a photography contest but an addictive random paying game…

Hi Jennifer, I joined Guru Shots back in December 2016. Almost 2 years later and Im still at expert, have 660.000 points, 72 challenges at levels: top 100, top 10%, top 20%, and top 30% (All Star+). I need 1 x Guru Pick for Champion, then 2 x Guru for Master, 2 more and 1 Win Challenge for Guru. I believe the algorithm favours those with either a lot of time on their hands, or the cash to pay for the swaps, boosts, and fills required to beat the system. Not sure I have the passion or the time left anymore to keep competing for a prize which I am starting to believe isn’t really worth what I put into it. I have started my own photographic services business in Australia, and I think my time is better spent with people who actually like my work, and commission me accordingly.
I am also a member on ViewBug and I find the photography of a much higher quality and standard there, Just saying. I also found quite a few anomolies with Guru shots, same two photos in a speed challlenge by the same photographer with individual points for each photo, top photographers with 4 shots – all of the same subject win a challenge, five different Gurus taking out the first top 5 photos in challenges, including Gurus top pick. same photos appearing in the same challenge over and over, boosting a photo and have not one vote after boosting for the whole time left in the challenge. I know my post will sound like sour grapes, but I am pretty disappointed with the lack of skill required to get up the rankings if you have both time and money.
    Regards Linden

It’s just a game Linden, with nothing to expect, nothing to gain except pleasure…

G’day @Linden, great to hear from you we’re from Australia. Like @Thierry commented back, it’s a game (thanks Thierry) whether it’s educational or not. As I said, the main reason, I stopped because I don’t have much time voting or buying votes for trading my precious time. Great to hear you’re focusing more out there than Gurushots experience alone. Have a great success with your photography business service!

Well….I got my 6th Guru pick and am very pleased…:-)…but I need to get into that 5% to advance to Masters….thought I will manage that for this year Xmas!…how do you get into 5%..?….it is harder for me to do that then to get Guru pick, or so it seems!….Gurus like my photos but the public doesn’t ?…lol…..hope you have great Xmas all…:-))

      Hi Nitka
A top 100 also counts as a top 5% so don’t despair! Merry Christmas!

The problem with Gurushots is voting (or money) is required to take part. Voting is tedious and there is as much incentive (if not more) to vote for a crappy photo as a good one.

You can vote on the photo (not much bigger than) thumbnails. You don’t need to see full size which explains why ridiculously fuzzy and low res photos can do well. You can even vote on the ‘slot’ where the photos will be before they are loaded and displayed.

The pixoto site scheme requiring you to chose the best of two or viewbug scheme requiring you to pick the best 2 of 4 are much more sensible (apart from viewbug not being anonymous which makes them photographer not photograph competitions).

Wonderful game except they seem to have a flawed system for identifying images that are not originals (just cut and pasted clip art from the Internet). One person has been reported more than 20 times by different players for uploading clip art from the Internet, but Gurushots has done nothing. I’m looking on this day and a low-rez cut-and-paste-from-the-web photo is winning a “Play Ball” challenge with nine hours left after three veteran players (three “masters” ) reported it as taken from the Internet while providing the web address from which it was stolen. Yes, I’m a sore loser because I’m sitting in third, but the second place photo is superior to mine, as are maybe 30 of the top 100, which means, yes, the voting system is a mess, too. Here is a player site with, it appears, only two original photos. It was reported by three people, at the least: https://gurushots.com/Kiya.West44/photos

So disappointed that guru shots is rigged. My picture received 1,100 votes in a short space of time ( approx 2.5 hours ) and then not one vote appeared for 2 hours. Please don’t tell me it’s just a coincidence. Guru normally vote for gurus in the choice section. Maybe if you bye swaps and boost you may get somewhere., but that defeats the objective of the game.
